Running toward something, running away from something — whatever gets these characters’ legs moving, rest assured they will bring you an excellent time at the movies.
“Blair Witch”
You sneaky marketing, you. What started out as “The Woods” is apparently the sequel to “The Blair Witch Project,” the pioneer of the “found footage” subgenre that got heads turning through equally-wild promoting tactics. In a rather meta move, James (James Allen McCune) finds the footage of his sister’s, Heather, tragic expedition, which prompts him to believe that she is still alive. So begins a search into darkness with devastating results. It seems like the film is in great hands with directing duo Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, who quickly become household names in the genre after a string of hits. It’s also neat, and somewhat eerie, that the 1999 film also had two people at the helm: Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez.
“Bridget Jones’s Baby”
Goodbye Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and hello Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey). But just as the titular publishing executive (Renée Zellweger) is settling down with the latter, the former re-enters her life. To complicate matters even more, she is pregnant without knowing which of her two flames is the father. If this is the last film in the franchise, it will live the “full circle” concept: Director Sharon McGuire, who first brought the character on screen in “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” returned to helm “Baby.”
“Snowden”
When NSA contractor Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) leaked the documents revealing the government’s controversial method of gathering intelligence, he became a hero. Or a traitor? Maybe a savior? Decide for yourself. The film is based on two books: “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man” by Luke Harding and “Time of the Octopus” by Anatoly Kucherena.
