Since this summer, I have been on journey to find the greatest taco spot in Houston. This list contains some of the highlights from my journey.
- Brothers Taco House, 1604 Emancipation Ave, Houston, TX 77003
This humble shack has some of the best flour tortillas that I have ever had. I’ve been “Team Corn Tortillas” all my life, but these ones are soft, structurally sound and leave plenty room for the flavors of the meat to mosey on through my mouth. My usual is two fajita tacos with plenty of the spicy light green sauce, and it only sets me back a cool $4.33 including tax. Infuriatingly, this spot closes at 3 p.m., probably to give me a fighting chance at being fiscally responsible.
- Laredo Taqueria, 915 Snover St, Houston, TX 77007
I honestly only went to this spot because Brother’s was already closed and I couldn’t wait another day to satisfy my taco cravings. Next thing I know, I’m driving down the once-infamous Washington Avenue and I see the green silhouette of Laredo Taqueria. I decide to pull in, giving the place a chance to fill the taco-shaped hole in my stomach. The tacos only set me back $5 and it was worth every penny, given the quantity and quality of the meat and the surprisingly non-overbearing tortillas.
- El Rey Del Taco, 2509 Oakcliff St, Houston, TX 77023
This quaint taco truck is where this journey began. Their snack-size tacos are the perfect gateway into a world of tortillas and meat. The tacos are simple, with only toppings of cilantro and onion. However, you can bring your taco up a notch by asking for the sweet caramelized onions. Oh, I forgot to mention that these little guys are only $1 each (so get at least five) and this truck is a short drive from campus.
