For gamers across the globe, 2017 was an important and revolutionary year. With new, fast-paced games like “Nier: Automata,” nearly perfect JRPG’s with “Persona 5” and the continual rise of VR with “Resident Evil 7,” it felt like every type of gamer had something to cherish and enjoy for a long time. But one company stood at the top during this period of innovation, and that was Nintendo. The release of their newest console, the Nintendo Switch, was such a huge success that it completely shadowed the less-than-stellar sales of the WiiU. With stunning open-world adventure games like “Breath of the Wild” and “Xenoblade Chronicles 2,” one of the funnest party games involving their revolutionary motion controls 1-2 Switch, and quite possibly the best game of the year, “Super Mario Odyssey.” And in case you do not already possess a Switch after these releases, Nintendo has plenty more in store for the year of 2018.
Nintendo fans saw some familiar faces in 2017 like Mario, Link, and the Splatoon characters. Another one to look out for this year is “Kirby Star Allies,” the next big Kirby platform game. Players can play as Kirby who is joined by up to three companions which, during multiplayer mode, other players can choose. For the most part, it will have Kirby’s standard abilities; flying and inhaling enemies to absorb their powers and use them for his own. However, another feature is being able to use his companions’ special attacks and combine them with his own, a feature not seen in Kirby games since “Kirby: Squeak Squad.” Another adored character returning with his own game is Mario’s faithful and adorable green dinosaur, Yoshi. With a new lively art style that resembles a miniature diorama, Yoshi has never looked better. You can join friends for an exciting platform play through filled with both main paths to follow or hidden paths for those who want more of a challenge and rewards to find. But it is not just these beloved characters that are coming to the Switch, one of the most revolutionary aspects about this console was Nintendo’s decision to no longer make it exclusive to Nintendo games. So let’s have a look at some of the other games they will be offering outside of their franchise.
Ever since they announced that games like “Skyrim” would be on the Nintendo Switch, people were pretty skeptical. The Nintendo Switch seemed like the perfect party console and these two just didn’t seem to mix. However, I would like to quell these doubts. This will be an important step for all gamers as this move could possibly lead to cross-console connectivity. So for now, I believe playing “Skyrim” on the Switch will be a breathtaking experience with its new controls. But how about adding some difficulty? Die-hard “Dark Souls” fans eagerly await the remaster of this gem to make its appearance. Combining the popular console with this unbelievably difficult adventure is sure to catch the eye of anyone looking for a challenge. And with the release of “Street Fighter” when the Switch was first released, keep an eye out for the 30th anniversary edition coming soon. Having been a loved fighting game for generations, it is sure to bring out the multiplayer fun for hours on the Switch.
Even though it has almost been a year since the Nintendo Switch was released, it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. With amazing titles already released, upcoming Nintendo characters, and games never seen before on a Nintendo console, everybody can find something to enjoy on it whether it’s a platform game, an epic adventure, a fighting game, or a party game. The possibilities are endless and I hope that you will pick up your own copy soon and experience this gaming sensation.
