For Kingdom Hearts fans out there, childhood dreams were finally brought at this year’s D23 Expo in Japan. The expo gave us a breathtaking and action-packed trailer for history’s longest awaited game.
It has been about 13 years since the last console release; and we have been dying for more material. When watching this year’s trailer, is it any wonder how this franchise has been able to wrap us around its fingers for so long? Is it any wonder that we willingly played multiple filler games, each on separate systems, with the most confusing plot ever? Judging from what the trailer revealed, many were reminded just how magical this series is and why it has our undying support.
One of the most crucial elements in any Kingdom Hearts game is meeting and fighting alongside your favorite Disney characters. Each game has introduced a plethora of Disney worlds for our main trio, Sora, Donald, and Goofy, to explore.
The games range from exploring the nonsensical Wonderland from “Alice in Wonderland,” the spooky yet charming Halloween Town from “A Nightmare Before Christmas,” and the action-packed land of treasure and wonders, Agrabah from “Aladdin.” Fans have always been curious about the Disney worlds that would be included in each game, and the third installment has four new worlds; some brand new, others anticipated for a long time.
Ones that have been confirmed are “Tangled,” “Toy Story,” “Big Hero 6,” and “Monsters Inc.” And seeing these worlds in the trailer made us even more excited at the thought of traversing these lands we have come to love on the big screen.
A few scenes were shown from the trailer that indicate a fighting style similar to the first two installments of the series. However, it has become much more diverse in what the player and the party is capable of. For starters, whereas the first two games could allow three party members max, the third game is allowing four since Woody and Buzz as well as Mike Wazowski and Sully can both be seen on screen with the main trio.
This could change the party system drastically. Will the party be overpowering in the face of enemies? Or will it allow for even more interesting ways to combat enemies?
The second aspect is a much heavier presence of magic and special abilities. Each shot of combat features Sora and his trust keyblade dishing out some new techniques that not only look cool, but seem to dish out the pain rather well. Perhaps this means each keyblade will have their own special moves outside of stats or they are brand new abilities.
This made fans excited and curious about the more complex and entertaining battle system. Finally, the use of summoning was revealed, a long-time favorite game mechanic of the series.
Featuring Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” the graphics made her look stunning and gave a beautiful water effect. While this is exciting, this means that the world of Atlantis probably won’t be making a story appearance.
If you’re a fan like me, you’ll probably be watching this trailer countless times just to satisfy yourself. Stay tuned for more info on Kingdom Hearts 3 and hang on just a little longer; it’ll be here soon (hopefully without yet another delay). In the meantime, you might want to brush up on that story line.
