In today’s world, it seems as though there has to be a meaning for everything, especially when it comes to your first tattoo. But, sometimes, it’s the experience that makes a first tattoo special and not the actual tattoo itself.
Like every other 18-year-old, I rushed to the tattoo shop ready to get my first set of ink. My best friends at the time tagged along with me, hyping me up the entire way.
Once we got there, it became more of an experience than anything else. My best friend, Rachel, had the funniest idea to get a planet tattooed on her left ass-cheek. Before I knew it, I was getting a tattoo of a diamond on my chest. Simply because my name’s Diamond. Nothing more, nothing less.
When I look at my honestly really well-done Diamond, I’m not thinking about the beautiful art job my artist did. I’m thinking about me and Rachel, lying on the stretchers clenching our hands in pain with the sounds of the needle buzzing against our skin. I’m not going to lie to you; it does hurt. A lot.
Now, I’m not saying your tattoo can’t have a meaning because by all means if you want to get a special flower that reminds you of a loved one then do it! But if you just want to get an elephant because you love elephants, then who’s stopping you?
However, what I will say about getting your first tattoo is to make sure you go to a tattoo parlor that knows what they’re doing. If your art piece looks super rad and beautifully intricate, you’re not going to regret it as you get older. You’ll be proud of your battle scar, and you’ll laugh at how crazy you were when you were young.
The best thing about turning 18 is doing the idiotic things you get might not do when adulthood hits you. You should enjoy your life, have fun, live a little and be surrounded by those who will encourage you to get crazy but not too crazy.
