UH's lifestyle and entertainment magazine - by students, for students

Picture this. You’re sitting in bed, next to the window, where you can see leaves on the trees outside turning red, orange and yellow. You tuck yourself under your favorite plush blanket and sip on a nice, warm pumpkin spice latte while immersed in the pages of a book. For any book lover, this sounds ideal.

If you’re on the hunt to look for some new books that you could read this fall, be sure to check out the following book recommendations.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

Genre: Fantasy Romance

A book about a witch teaching other children how to control their magic? Yes, please! And it has a romantic subplot too? Say no more!

This book follows the adventures of Mika, a witch who gets invited to Nowhere House. At this old country estate, she teaches three orphaned children how to control their magic. The caretaker of the three children and a handsome librarian, Jamie, would do anything to protect the children and considers Mika a threat. As Mika finds herself getting more engrossed in the lives of these children, she’s going to have to decide whether to risk everything she had for her newfound family…

This book screams out “fall vibes” loud and clear. And it has a gorgeous cover to top it off.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Genre: Thriller

If you fall on the other side of the book spectrum (no pun intended!) and prefer books with eerie and spooky vibes, you might enjoy The Guest List by Lucy Foley. Foley is a well-known author in the world of thrillers.

This book is set on a remote island in West Ireland where a lavish wedding celebration is taking place. An occasion meant to be joyous gets interrupted when someone ends up getting murdered. The rest of the book is a journey to find out who the murderer is while secrets and mysteries unfold simultaneously.

Books like these are always fun because you get a chance to be Sherlock (or Enola) Holmes for a while as you make up your own theories to guess the culprit and find out if you’re right or not.

Accidentally Amy by Lynn Painter

Genre: Romance

Like me, if you love reading about love and want to feel all cozy this fall, you would love Accidentally Amy.

The story revolves around a girl named Izzy who finds herself claiming an abandoned Starbucks drink for someone named Amy when she’s late for her new job. To make things more complicated, she ends up spilling her drink on a handsome stranger who turns out to be her boss and thinks she is actually Amy. Sparks fly between the two people, as they try to keep their relationship professional. But we all know how that’s going to turn out…

This is a cute workplace romance, with easy-going dialogues and it captures the essence of fall, which is exactly what you’d be looking for at this time of the year.

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin Craig

Genre: Fantasy

If you enjoy retellings, you could consider trying this book, which is a loose iteration of ‘The Twelve Dancing Princesses.’

This book revolves around 12 sisters who are cursed. Four of the 12 sisters have mysteriously died and each death is more tragic than the last. One of the sisters, Annaleigh believes the deaths were more than just an accident and sets out to find what truly happened before another tragedy can take place.

This one might be the right pick for you if you prefer a spooky, a little creepy, gothic and ghostly book. That vibe may be suited for this time of the year. And if you do end up loving this book, it’s good news for you because this book is a series, and the sequel to it just came out this year.

Just Don’t Fall by Emma St. Clair

Genre: Romance

This book has a fake-dating, second-chance romance and brother’s best friend trope all combined in one. Perfect for all the rom-com and sports lovers out there.

This book delivers swoon-worthy characters and chemistry, plus, all the fluffiness that we need from a rom-com. It follows Parker’s journey as a hockey team’s social media manager, who crosses paths with bad-boy hockey player, Logan. He was also her childhood crush and brother’s best friend. When the two meet again and somehow end up fake-dating, Parker has to try not to let Logan break her heart again like he did before. But love always has plans of its own, doesn’t it?

If you want a quick romance book with lovable characters and a big smile on your face, add this one to your cart.

I hope these books are exactly what you’ve been looking for this fall and that you enjoy whichever one you decide to read. Happy Reading!
