Concept costumes are OUT. Going all out for Halloween is IN!
Halloweekend, the weekend following halloween this year, is highly anticipated by college students regardless of class or major. After all, Halloween is the first big holiday of the fall semester.
This epidemic of concept costumes masquerading as being trendy across college campuses, however, is officially out.
Halloween is the one day of the year when minimum effort does not equal maximum slay. Going all out is in this year–because let’s be real, Jessica, no one gets you dressed as an olive martini when all you’re wearing is a green corset and a red scarf.
It seems like people are trading in the excitement and creativity of Halloween costumes for convenience. And ironically, concept costumes often fall flat.
They lack the depth they seem to promise and leave your friends and family puzzled trying to figure out how your gingham miniskirt and cherry-print tank top make you a “cherry pie.”
Let’s be honest, half the fun of Halloween is guessing what everyone is dressed up as! There’s nothing better than walking into a party and instantly recognizing your friends’ costumes. It’s also kind of satisfying when you see someone else’s costume and think, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Now, you may be thinking, “But, I still want to look cute on Halloween!” And, well, you absolutely can!
Dressing up doesn’t mean sacrificing style. You don’t need to be goofy, spooky or covered in fake blood to have fun. There are tons of costumes where you can look amazing and be in the Halloween spirit. There’s no need to resort to abstract ideas no one will understand.
Forget the “I don’t have the time or money for a costume” excuse too! With all of the inspiration floating across social media, this excuse is no longer going to cut it. Besides, thrifting is a perfectly valid and affordable option. You can also easily build on the basics you already have in your closet to create a standout look.
At its core, Halloween has always been about dressing up and having fun. Think back to when you were a kid. Whether you were a princess, a superhero or your dream job, it was about the joy of pretending to be something else for just one night.
So this year, live a little! Embrace the fun of Halloween! Dress up in something bold! Step out in an outfit you wouldn’t dare wear any other day of the year. After all, it’s Halloween, and Halloween is the one night of the year where anything goes!
