The holidays are a magical time to spread cheer, share kindness and make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

As we enjoy the festive atmosphere and connect with friends and family, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to share the joy with those facing challenges. Whether you want to make a significant difference or begin with small acts of kindness, giving back to your community can be the most rewarding gift you can give.

Here are some thoughtful suggestions for spreading holiday cheer and supporting others during this season of giving.

1. Visit The Elderly

The holidays are a time for togetherness and cherishing moments with family. Sadly, however, many seniors won’t have the joy of family visits this season.

Planning a visit to a nursing home or reaching out to elderly neighbors can make such a difference. Spend time sharing stories, singing carols or simply enjoying their company.

A little time and kindness can bring warmth and connection to their holiday season.

2. Donate to The Houston Food Bank

There are countless ways to support the Houston Food Bank this holiday season.

You can volunteer your time by calling or scheduling a visit to lend a hand at the food bank. Alternatively, you can make a meaningful impact with just $10 by sending a holiday card to someone special. Not only will your loved one receive a heartfelt card in return, but your contribution will help provide approximately 30 meals to those in need within our community.

It’s a simple yet powerful way to spread holiday cheer and give back.

 3. Contribute to A Community Wish Tree

The holiday season is filled with gift-giving and joy, but many children in need may not receive anything to celebrate this year.

This is where the Angel Tree program comes in! By participating, you can bring smiles to these kids’ faces and make their holidays unforgettable.

Gather your family, friends or roommates to adopt an angel and help make this season brighter for those who need it most. Start giving back by searching online to find stores or locations near you where you can pick up an angel!

4. Contribute by Doing Small Acts of Kindness

Sometimes, the tiniest gestures create the most profound effects.

This holiday season, let’s spread kindness through small, random acts. You could pay for someone’s coffee, leave a cheerful note for a friend or share some baked goods with your neighbors.

Another wonderful idea is to put together care packages filled with essentials and treats for those who may be struggling. These little acts of kindness not only brighten someone’s day but also help cultivate a spirit of positivity and joy throughout your community.

5. Tutor or Mentor Younger Students

Taking the initiative to tutor or mentor younger students during the holiday season is a beautiful way for us students to give back. Many children and teens may struggle with their studies and could greatly benefit from your support.

You can assist them with homework, college applications or preparing for tests, whether in local schools, community centers or through online platforms. Your involvement not only aids their academic success but also offers them the motivation and direction they need to chase their dreams.

This selfless act is a priceless gift which will leave a profound and enduring effect.

6. Make Holiday Cards

For many patients in hospitals, the holidays can feel lonely and difficult, especially when they are away from family.

One meaningful way to bring some light into their lives is by creating holiday cards. You can team up with friends to craft heartfelt messages, inspiring quotes and cheerful designs. Numerous hospitals, such as St. Jude, provide online platforms for sending digital cards as well, allowing you to share joy from anywhere.

This small act of kindness can truly uplift someone who could use a little extra cheer during this time.

7. Spread Holiday Cheer Around Campus

The spirit of the holidays is all about sharing joy.

A creative way to do this on campus, if you’re still around, is by leaving delightful Post-it notes for others to find.

Write encouraging phrases like “You’re doing wonderfully!” or “Happy Holidays! Keep pushing through.” Stick them in popular places around campus, such as the library, dining halls or restrooms.

These thoughtful notes can provide a pleasant surprise and serve as a reminder of kindness. It’s the perfect opportunity to brighten someone’s day and spread holiday warmth in this time when everyone could use a little extra support.

During this holiday season, let’s cultivate kindness and brighten our surroundings, one little act at a time.
