Not able to travel far for any spring break trips? Trying to save some money? Consider staying going on short day trips.
Houston is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. There is a lot to do within the city, but it can get boring at times. Here are some ideas for daily escapes from the city within reasonable timeframes and budgets.
Galveston
Galveston is perfect for spring break day trips from Houston. All you need is a full tank of gas and a few dollars for parking.
Only 50 miles from the University of Houston, Galveston is worth spending a day at.
Parking on Seawall Blvd. is inexpensive at $2 an hour. Plus, it has direct access to the beach. Warning: Be prepared for a sandy car afterward.
Many restaurants line Seawall Blvd. such as the novelty Rainforest Cafe. The Rainforest Cafe in Galveston is built into an impressive model volcano, which has a slow water ride at around $17 a ticket.
Galveston’s historic shopping district known as The Strand is also a fun walk with many unique shops to stop into. La King’s Confectionery is a great pit stop for those with a sweet tooth.
Brazos Bend State Park
Living in the city, sometimes it is good to reconnect with nature! Like Galveston, Brazos Bend is only about 50 miles from campus.
It is home to a ton of wildlife, from alligators to a variety of birds. You can go birdwatching, fishing, hiking, biking or any other outdoor activity you can think of.
San Antonio
San Antonio is another option.
Although the drive can be upwards of 3 hours, it’s worth it. Be sure to travel with friends or family you don’t mind being in the car with for long periods.
The downtown area of San Antonio is quite walkable, and there are areas with cheap, as well as free, parking. The food options are surprisingly affordable too.
The river walk starts by the iconic La Antorcha de la Amistad red sculpture. It’s a nice walk to take.
The Alamo is another free site to visit on this trip. Along the lines of Texas history, there are also a few missions in southern SA. Mission San Juan, for example, is incredible.
And the best part about any last-minute, spring break trips in Texas is you get to stop at Buc-ee’s on the way to and from your day trip destination.
