36 Questions, or what the New York Times calls “The future of musicals,” brings you songs for the summer.
Cooglife’s pod break recommendation this week will leave you singing.
36 Questions is a three-part musical podcast following estranged spouses Jase and Natalie—or really, Judith.
Judith has been lying about her identity to Jase throughout their marriage, and the podcast follows Judith’s attempt to reconnect. It’s a story about love, lies, familiarity and truth.
Produced by Two-Up and directed by Chris Littler and Ellen Winter, the show premiered on several audio platforms in the summer of 2017.
In the same year, it won an award for Jonathan Groff as Best Actor
Jonathan Groff plays Jase. Most may know Groff as King George in “Hamilton,” or more recently as Bobby Darin in “Just in Time.”
Judith, on the other hand, is played by Jessie Shelton who has had roles in numerous other podcast productions. Shelton also played one of the Fates in “Hadestown.”
Each hour-long act takes the audience through the fallout of Judith and Jase’s relationship.
The first Act introduces the audience to the conflict between the estranged spouses. The second develops the conflict and provides a deeper look at each character. And lastly, the third showcases the aftermath of their choices. This is where it all comes together.
Each embraces sound design and mixed-genre musical scores.
The acts each have a musical number—five in the first and four in the other two. Some stand-out songs to give a listen on the 2017 cast recording include the opening track of Act 1’s “Hear Me Out,” Act 2’s “Our Word” and Act 3’s finale “The Truth.”
There is also a deluxe album with 2 extra tracks featuring Ellen Winter’s vocal talents and a Big Band cover.
Those of you looking for a musical with a side of romantic drama can find all episodes on Spotify. You may also find more Two-Up productions on their website.
Check back weekly for podcast recommendations. The next will be something you can listen to and watch. Until then, sing along to 36 Questions!
