Don’t sleep on this one. This week Cooglife presents a thrilling podcast with a mini-series attached. The Edge of Sleep is an audio drama released in 2019. It follows the survivors of an epidemic killing people in their sleep.
The show stars famous filmmaker and Youtuber Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach as narrator and protagonist Dave.
This Qcode and Wood Elf show received a novelization soon after release, followed by a live-action adaptation on Amazon Prime in October of 2024.
Earlier in May, Tubi picked up the show after it dropped from Prime, allowing a larger audience to stream the show for free.
The show and podcast both follow Dave and his fellow survivors as they do their best to stay awake and survive.
There are some major differences between the show and podcast regarding certain characters and story beats—either changed entirely or re-organized.
Nevertheless, the show succeeds in streamlining the podcast’s story while improving on some aspects of the original audio drama. This is most notable with certain character conflicts.
The podcast itself is a gripping listen with a unique use of the audio format to present suspense alongside sprinkles of comedy.
Though the podcast ironically has more graphic scares, the show makes do with suitable usage of CGI and practical effects in its horror scenes.
The podcast leans more on the characters and their interactions throughout the story, investing the audience in their relationships and personalities with frequent flashbacks and dialogue. Each episode moves the characters one step closer to unraveling the mystery of the epidemic.
