UH's lifestyle and entertainment magazine - by students, for students

The retail season between September and December has a very distinct identity with its own fashion, activities and foods. It is also during these months when the annual return of fall fragrances fills up the displays of home fragrance and personal care stores.

While you may love this, your classmates are not exactly thrilled about every fall scent. The student body at the University of Houston has expressed incredibly strong opinions about some of the absolutely revolting scents.

These are the fall fragrances your classmates hate.

Butterscotch

Despite it being such a strong and unique scent, additional scent notes are rarely added to dilute the strength of butterscotch, letting it immediately take hold of any environment it is released in.

It is simply way too sweet, and not in a calming way like vanilla or coconut. It overwhelms the senses and makes one want to gag.

Caramel

Similar to butterscotch, caramel is way too sweet for many people, especially when notes of brown sugar are added to it. It is worse when mixed with other scents like apple or pumpkin, or to make matters even worse … butterscotch. Oh dear.

Apple crisp

Apple is incredibly refreshing, a simple tone that complements the senses, but apple crisp, on the other hand, is like an imposter who is not very good at their job. Paired with cinnamon, caramel and sugar notes, it is way too sweet.

Pumpkin spice

Pumpkin spice has its own controversy, with many people refusing to fall for the PSL propaganda.

The scent is an immediate no for anyone who would prefer their fall free from the strength of the spice. Pumpkins are already an acquired scent, so it is rare for a product that smells like a mix of it with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger to smell nice.

Gingerbread

The gingerbread scent in general is a bit of an oddity, supposedly a warm welcome to the winter season.

First of all, it is not even a fall scent, so why does it need to be pushed out so early? Second, it smells weird. There is yet to be a mix that successfully tones down the ginger part and incorporates the right amount of sweetness.

Cinnamon

The worst fall scent of them all, the one that ruins everything it dares to touch, is cinnamon.

It does not complement anything at all. It is just a strange spice that cannot be manipulated into a pure scent.

Okay, well sure, brown sugar cinnamon cookies all smell heavenly, but that’s where it ends. Realistically, who asked for fall scents like Sweet Pumpkin Cinnamon, Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel and Fresh Cinnamon Rolls? None of these smell nice at all.

Do yourself and your classmates a favor by staying away from these fall fragrances the next time you go to Bath and Body Works. Everyone will be eternally grateful.
