The Tony award winning musical “Hadestown” premiered at Houston’s Hobby Center on February 10th as part of the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center 2025-2026 Season.

The musical follows Orpheus and Eurydice, using nuances from a classic Greek myth of love and loss.

Although derived from existing material, “Hadestown” is a retelling of the original, intersecting the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice with that of Greek gods Persephone and Hades.

Orpheus’ journey into the underworld is provoked by the separation between himself and Eurydice, which catches the attention of their immortal opposites.

The young artist has to trek into the industrial maze of Hadestown to retrieve his muse, while working on a song that will bring the estranged gods back together.

“Hadestown” at the Hobby Center uses intricate set designs, innovative lighting techniques, and strong vocals to convey themes of tragedy.

The heart of the show is the fantastic musical performances from the cast, with special attention to the band’s Trombone player Haik Demirchian.

The main cast included Jose Contreras and Hawa Kamara, playing Orpheus and Eurydice, and Namisa Mdlalose Bizana as Persephone.

Nickolaus Colón plays Hades, but at the premiere of this Houston tour, the audience had the surprise of Hades’ understudy Ryaan Farhadi playing the king of the underground.

His rendition of Hades shook the room with loud and low bellowing notes that blurred the line between heart and hatred.

“Hadestown,” beautifully blends themes of attachment and devastation through intense dialogue and poignant music.
