With the arrival of a new season, it’s time to cleanse and refresh not only yourself but also your surroundings. Here are some deep cleaning tips.

Don’t Put It Off

Sometimes a task seems too tedious and boring to begin, and therefore, it never gets done. The best time to do something you don’t want to do is now.

If you get home from class or work with an hour to spare, just do the hard task(s) you have been putting off for months. Take out that rug. Move the furniture around. Clean out your fridge.

Get over the mindset of finding a better time to do something. If you have time now, then do it now. Once it’s over, you will be happier.

Clean Out Your Closet

If there is a piece in your wardrobe you haven’t worn in over a year, consider moving it to storage, passing it on to someone else or even selling or donating it.

Consider worn-out, stained or torn pieces and what you want to do with them. You could potentially DIY restyle those pieces—cutting or sewing them differently. You could also use them as fabric for other projects or for cleaning purposes.

Start Small

When beginning a deep clean, start with small steps. Once you get into the cleaning groove, you will be more motivated to move on to harder cleaning tasks like dusting and sweeping.

Start with putting things into place—putting away laundry, shelving books, organizing desks etc. If things are constantly out of place, consider moving them around to make organization more convenient. For example, if you’re always leaving laundry around, try a different storage method. Make it easier for yourself, whether it be hanging or folding.

Make it easier for yourself to keep things clean. If you don’t have time to sweep or vacuum, take out your rugs or avoid making a mess on them.

These small steps will make your cleaning easier in the future.

Easier cleaning means you may be open to cleaning more often.

Envision Your Plans

This tip is geared towards redecoration— the unintentional twofer that accompanies deep cleanings. However, spontaneously moving your furniture is fun and all, until you realize something does not fit in the space you envisioned it.

There are so many creative options to avoid this. Creating models using building tools in games such as The Sims 4 can help or with virtual room designers such as Target’s Home Planner. Alternatively, if digital is not your style, try sketching out a draft of your plans.

Redesigning your space on a whim can be difficult, so plan first, not afterward. Putting your aesthetic visions and ideas on screen or paper helps greatly with this process. It can also motivate you to start that overdue cleaning
