“The Da Vinci Code” premiered Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the packed Alley Theatre.
This stage adaptation of the critically acclaimed book follows symbologist Robert Langdon and cryptographer Sophie Neveu as they adventure across Europe to uncover an ancient secret, all while evading the police and a robed killer.
Show-stopping scenic design by Michael Locher featured bright lights, ancient architecture and mobile sculptures. Fog machines supported the lights and projections, giving visual context to each cathedral, crypt and chateau visited along the way.
Additionally, music and sound design elevated each scene with building melodies that scored each moment of discovery.
A surprising amount of comedy came from the main cast.
Banter between Zack Fine and Melissa Molano ignited laughter in the crowd with each pun made. Fine brought the flustered academic Langdon to life flawlessly, and Molano successfully carried an emotional connection to the mystery with Neveu’s monologues.
Todd Waite chewed the scenery with his portrayal of Teabing, elevating the comedy and drama with each line.
Chris Hutchison gave a convincing performance as Silas, delivering moments of sincerity and desperation as the robed killer.
The performance established a great blueprint for future action and intrigue plays.
“The Da Vinci Code” serves as a great introduction to theater. The show is scheduled to run through Oct. 19 at the Alley Theatre.
