Psychological thriller “The Girl on the Train” premiered at Houston’s Alley Theatre on Jul. 24, 2026, as part of the venue’s annual Summer Chills series.
The play is based on the 2015 bestselling novel by Paula Hawkins, and the 2016 DreamWorks film of the same name.
Adapted by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel, the story follows eccentric Rachel Watson, a woman struggling with memory loss due to substance abuse.
When a woman living in Rachel’s old apartment complex goes missing, Rachel must put the fragments of her memory together to help the appointed Detective Gaskill solve the case.
The play serves as a complex analysis of human emotions and interactions. When asked about the common themes of the show, resident actor Rainey says, “The play brings up deeper issues on the way men and women interact with each other, and how we treat each other.”

Furthermore, the critically acclaimed show features a talented ensemble of actors from the Alley Theatre’s resident acting company. The cast includes Elizabeth Bunch as Rachel Watson, David Rainey as D.I Gaskill, and many others.
When asked about the company, Rainey further states, “The great thing about a resident company is that we all know each other very well. We’ve done many shows together, we know each other’s family, and we know how we respond to things.”
