The art exhibit titled “To the 9s: Senior Graphic Design Exhibition” was held for the graduating seniors from Sam Houston State University on April 18-21 at the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery in Huntsville.
The exhibit featured installation pieces and a central theme on graphic design, describing the participants’ representation of their career as an artist.
As you entered the exhibit, there were nine exhibits of the graduating seniors.
When asked what the name of the exhibit represented, graphic design senior Joshua Ortiz said it was a play on words.
“We chose the the name ‘To the 9s’ because you want to look your best,” Ortiz said. “The name also shows the nine artists here.”
People from the university, friends and family of the artists and anyone else who heard of the exhibit from the university was invited to attend.
The artwork showcased the seniors’ final presentation of their work throughout their time at the university.
Ortiz said his favorite installation was the “Lunar Landing.” The concept of the piece came from the two types of speeches the president prepares for in the event of a needed, immediate response.
Ortiz printed the speech and allowed the art to scan.
“I positioned it so there’s tons of black space in the middle,” Ortiz said. “Then I added nice, clean typography.”
Dan Mitsven, program manager of Lone Star college and one of Ortiz’s previous bosses, said it was great seeing his old employee grow as an artist.
“It’s amazing what he’s done,” Mitsven said. “I’m not an art guy, but you know what looks good when you see it.”
Ortiz’s artwork may be seen at Sam Houston State University in the art gallery titled “To the 9s: Senior Graphic Design Exhibition.”
Ortiz won the best poster for his piece “Lunar Landing” and best illustration for his work on “Monsters of Abuse” awards at the exhibit.
“I’m glad I get to see all my friends and family support me,” Ortiz said.
Carmen Trujillo, a creative writing graduate from the University of Texas in San Antonio said she was proud of her friend, Ortiz, and his artistic achievements.
“I’m so proud of him, he’s come a long way since high school,” Trujillo said.
When asked what he felt about winning the two awards, Ortiz said he felt surprised.
“Everyone of my classmates are pretty amazing,” Ortiz said. “I would have never thought mine would stand out the most.”
