As commuters, we all know the trek from our homes to school can be a long one. Especially if you, like me, commute from Cinco Ranch a solid 40 minute drive from UH sans traffic. Through my two and a half years as a commuter, I have curated a list of items I highly encourage you keep in your car.
Umbrella/Rain boots
We all know Houston weather is unreliable at best. The last thing you want is to get stuck on campus in the middle of a downpour. I’ve reached into my trunk for an umbrella and rain boots more than once. Every time I don’t have them I regret it immensely.
Change of Clothes
I don’t know about you but I’ve definitely spilled coffee on myself or gotten caught in the rain and desperately needed a change of clothes. T-shirts, Nike shorts, jeans, sweatshirt— all of these are easy enough to throw in your trunk and comfortable for school. My personal favorite is a t-shirt dress because its one piece and you can always dress it up or down.
Chargers
I for one hate lugging all my chargers around school, they make my backpack significantly heavier and they always get tangled up in the end. Wrap up your laptop, phone, and whatever else charger and store them away in your trunk. You’ll always have them with you but they wont be weighing you down.
P.s. make sure to fully charge all your electronics before coming to school.
Pillow and Blanket
Go with me on this. When I say keep a pillow and blanket in your car I don’t mean convert your car into a hotel. But, if you need a place to crash and you’re staying at a friends they might not have an extra blanket or pillow. This way you always have one with you and if you need to take a nap in your car (trust me, we’ve all been there) you can.
First Aid Kit
This is fairly obvious and honestly, whether or not you commute you should probably keep one of these in your car. I recommend assembling your own with whatever makes sense for you. For example, I keep band aids, Advil, Excedrin Migraine, Midol and Neosporin in my kit.
