The inaugural Big As Texas Music Festival kicked off in style yesterday, May 10, at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. With a lineup boasting some of the biggest names in country music, festival-goers were treated to a non-stop day of foot-stompin’ good times under the Texas sun.
Thankfully, Celsius drinks were on hand to keep everyone cool with their free drink station.
The gates swung open at noon, welcoming a sea of Stetsons and boots ready to embrace the spirit of Texas. The festival grounds buzzed with activity – from tempting aromas wafting from the food vendors to the vibrant displays of local artisans. Attendees seeking a break from the music could witness live hat-making demonstrations, marvel at chainsaw wood sculptures or even catch a glimpse of some friendly pig races.
As the afternoon sun dipped lower, the music took center stage across the festival’s two stages: the sprawling Jackalope Stage, the undisputed main attraction, and the Armadillo Stage, a vibrant platform for up-and-coming artists.
Rising star Julia Cole warmed up the crowd with her infectious energy on the Jackalope Stage, while established acts like Maddie & Tae brought the energy to a fever pitch on the Armadillo Stage. Their chart-topping hits had the audience singing along word-for-word, creating a massive karaoke experience under the Texas sky.
For those needing a recharge (besides the music!), the festival offered convenient phone charging stations, perfect for capturing all the festival memories. And for folks wanting a different kind of thrill, an on-site axe-throwing area provided a unique way to test their skills.
But the fun didn’t stop there! Fred’s Bounce House offered a high-energy zone for the little ones (and maybe some adventurous adults), ensuring the entire family could enjoy the festival experience.
The evening offered a chance to see a Tennessee-native grace the Jackalope Stage. Chase Matthew delivered a powerful set filled with emotional ballads, captivating the audience with his songwriting and stage presence.
Following him, at the Armadillo Stage, Clay Walker, a Texas favorite known for hits like “Whatcha Gonna Do With That Tongue” and “If I Fall You’re Going With Me” took the stage. Walker’s nostalgic set had fans singing along and two-stepping in the dust, bringing back memories of classic country.
But the undisputed king of the night was headliner Thomas Rhett. With a career-spanning setlist that included smash hits like “Die a Happy Man” and “It Goes Like This,” Rhett had the entire festival singing, dancing and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
As the first day drew to a close, a sense of camaraderie and pure enjoyment filled the air.
The Big As Texas Music Festival has undoubtedly established itself as a major player in the Texas music scene. With two more days packed with incredible artists – including Billy Strings, Dwight Yoakam, Dierks Bentley and Midland – the festival promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for all. Stay tuned for more coverage as we continue our journey through the heart of Texas music!
