In a haze of sweat, dust and swaying bodies, the first day of Austin City Limits Music Festival’s weekend two came to an end.

Chris Stapleton & Surprise Guest

To kick off ACL day one festivities, headliner Chris Stapleton brought music legend Willie Nelson onto the stage. The surprise guest is arguably one of the greatest country musicians–paving the way for Austin’s spot on the music map.

The duo sat down on the stage and strum their guitars together. They sang “Whiskey River,” Nelson’s staple opening song–captivating the audience.

Nelson’s surprise appearance was also a full circle moment for the 91-year-old country artist.

Oct. 18, marks the 50th anniversary for Nelson’s first taping of an episode for “Austin City Limits.” The outdoor, Texas-sized festival we now get to experience began from the pilot Nelson shot.

Stapleton also performed some of his popular songs “You Should Probably Leave,” “White Horse” and “The Devil Named Music.”

On the other side of the festival, on the Honda stage, American rock band Blink-182 took the stage.

The show started with fireworks. The band sang their greatest hits such as “What’s my age again” and “I miss you.”

They bantered on stage, and the line tipped between funny and very problematic.

No Stephen Sanchez, but at least we got The Paper Kites

Stephen Sanchez was scheduled to perform on the T-mobile stage at 5:30 p.m. He was sick, unfortunately, and instead, The Paper Kites, an Australian indie rock and folk, band performed.

ACL is their first-ever music festival, the lead singer said on stage.

The band had a strong stage presence and moved in sync with one another. They played some of their songs such as “I’m Lying To You Cause I’m Lost” and “Bloom.”

The group ended their set on a peppy, rocky high note.

Throughout the set, there were guitar and drum solos, defining the rock band as a partnership.

More Cowboy Hats & Guitar Solos

Leon Bridges, Foster The People, Norah Jones, Sir Chloe, Late Night Drive Home, The Marians and plenty others also took part in ACL yesterday.
