UH's lifestyle and entertainment magazine - by students, for students

The Youth Mental Health Guide, created by the Mayor’s Office of Education and Youth Engagement (MOEYE), provides a truly groundbreaking resource to empower youths on their mental health journeys.

Young adults continue to face mental health challenges. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in three young adults experiences mental illness in the U.S. With anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation rates on the rise, access to mental health resources for young adults is crucial.

In 2023, the University of Houston faced a fatal, mental health crisis. In response to the incidents, students organized protests and vigils, demanding better mental health support. After, UH expanded its Counseling and Psychological Services and waived session fees. UH also introduced a 24/7 mental health access service through a vendor.

The Mayor’s Office of Education and Youth Engagement in Houston offers a Youth Mental Health Guide.

It is a resource designed to equip youth and families with mental health education, wellness techniques and local resources. It could prove to be valuable for any individual seeking mental health resources for themselves or others around them.

The resource section of this guide stands out.

The guide shares helpful tools to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. It also ensures vulnerable groups receive the help they may need.

The Youth Mental Health Guide offers access to crisis lines and online tools. It also features local support for marginalized groups such as LGBTQ+ youths, immigrants, youths with disabilities and those in foster care.

Marginalized populations tend to face multiple challenges due to discriminatory policies and societal polarization. These groups are at risk of facing family separation, social exclusion and abuse, highlighting the importance of sharing these resources.

If you—or someone you know—are looking for support or want to learn more, check out the guide. One reader at a time, the guide can help foster a more informed and supportive community in regards to mental health. The Youth Mental Health Guide is available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. You can access it here.
