No need to leave the house for this feature-length presentation, “Shipworm” brings movie quality to the realm of audio.

This two-hour audio drama follows Doctor Conway.

Conway follows instructions given to him by a voice implanted in his ear. This messenger threatens to hurt him and his family if he doesn’t comply.

As the story unfolds, Conway learns just how far the voice will go to keep him in line and how low he’ll have to go to stay alive.

Written by Zack Akers and produced by Skip Bronkie, “Shipworm” presents listeners with theatrical acting and fully scored scenes.

Broadway stars Quentin Earl Darrington and Miriam Silverman perform against each other as Conway and The Conductor respectively, while surging strings and bustling backgrounds invite the audience to imagine each scene as they play out.

This production is Two-Up’s fourth show after “36 Questions.”

Created during the COVID-19 pandemic and released in 2021, this audio drama used the lull from film and television productions to innovate and experiment in the audio sphere.

Utilizing remote methods combined with studio sessions, the crew succeeded in keeping quality high and infection low.

The story is in line with 90’s action thrillers where everything runs on all cylinders from start to finish. Every action brings out a little more of the protagonist’s past and lays breadcrumbs to follow until the end.

The presentation is clear, with the atmospheric audio providing context to each scene while the acting shines through.

Only one moment lacks audio impact.

This is when an incident occurs between two characters, but it’s hard to discern exactly what occurred until later.

Nevertheless, the rest of the program does a good job of giving the audience a general idea of where the characters are in each scene.

For this listen, you’ll want to heat up some popcorn to top off the experience.

Enjoy the sounds of action and suspense in “Shipworm” and then check in next time for an ongoing podcast filled with a mix of frights and laughs.
