As the 2025 summer season comes to a close, we at Cooglife couldn’t help but wonder what Coogs were up to over the last few months so we ran a poll. We anticipated responses would include summer classes and travel, and we were not disappointed.

Here’s what Coogs did this summer.

They swam.

Early humans are believed to have learned how to swim for survival and food sourcing purposes. Depicted in ancient artifacts and cave drawings, swimming has undeniably been a staple human activity.

Today, swimming, whether in pools, rivers, lakes or the ocean, has become a signal of spring, increasing in its popularity during the summer months.

Keeping the tradition very much alive, Coogs responded to our poll letting us know that this summer, they made sure to spend it swimming, or at least looking cute by the pool or beach while watching others do all the swimming.

They traveled.

For college-aged individuals, summer also usually marks a season of traveling. This could be traveling back home, studying abroad, going on Eat, Pray, Love trips or fun road trips with family and friends.

Via sky, water, road and rail, Coogs did not disappoint with their recollections of their fun summer travels. These memories also double as great conversation starters during the beginning of semester networking sessions or syllabus week introductory fun facts.

They read a lot.

With the amount of book reviews and recommendations Cooglife has shared over the years, it’s no secret to us that the University of Houston is home to some serious readers. Clock it.

So, it was no surprise to find out that some Coogs spent their summer getting through as many books as they possibly could. To that, we say: yasss, Book-Coogs!

Besides, leisure reading is almost always more exciting than reading textbooks during the semester.

They interned.

In the midst of all the fun, Coogs still managed to bring their A-game this summer, securing high value internship opportunities.

In fact, even Cooglife saw a dip in summer stories with almost all of our staff writers out interning full time.

But every good thing must eventually come to an end, so here we are saying goodbye to summer break filled with great company and great memories.

As Coogs prepare to head back to classes on Monday, Aug. 25, we recommend two things.

The first is to reflect on the underlying life lessons learned this summer and make note of how you may use them to set yourself up for success this semester.

The second is to make new friends in the upcoming week by starting your syllabus week conversations with, “So, what did you do this summer?” You never know the stories you may hear in response or the kinds of friendships they may trigger.
