As her latest project, actress and singer Mckenna Grace released “LOSER!!,” proving pop-punk and female rage are a match made in heaven.

Released on her 18th birthday, “LOSER!!” encapsulates Grace’s feelings after breaking her own heart, as stated in her Instagram post, and brilliantly captures the rollercoaster of being a teenager.

With a slow, moody opening, Grace sings about blowing off her friends and being upset, despite her being the problem, a feeling all too similar for some.

Before transitioning to the chorus, Grace sings to herself “You just need to grow up,” which is the catalyst for the early 2000s style heard throughout the rest of the song.

Her lyrics are nothing short of relatable and self-aware, sarcastically singing “Nobody’s felt this way it’s just me” and how she’s “so original” and “a genius” for her music taste and writing style.

Whether intentional or not, “LOSER!!” makes references to a handful of Grace’s previous songs.

The line “So much bitterness inside me, all the sweet’s wearing off” compliments Grace’s debut EP released in 2023, “Bittersweet 16.” Her 2023 single “Ugly Crier” shines through, with lyrical similarities regarding her feeling like a loser and a waste of space.

Released in 2022, “Do all my friends hate me?” highlights Grace’s paranoia of her friends avoiding her and despite acknowledging she’s overthinking, she still ends up crying alone, a notion seen with the opening lyrics of her newest song.

Grace also doesn’t shy away from including her musical inspirations, with references to Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag,” and Gwen Stefani and her iconic song, “Hollaback Girl.”

Blink-182 is also a clear inspiration, with nods to songs “What’s My Age Again?” and “The Rock Show,” and to the group as a whole when Grace belts “just another Blink-182 wannabe.”

With the song’s style reminiscent of Avril Lavigne, Grace alludes to her and other similar artists with her ironic line “Just another blonde trying to be a punk rock singer.”

Closing out the song, Grace brings the energy back down to the beginning and once again sings about her attempt to be a punk rock singer.

Also released with the song was a prom-themed music video with the help of friends Julia Butters, Scarlett Estevez, August Maturo, Josie Reitman and Aryan Simhadri.

Grace’s discography tests a variety of genres, with recent releases “Gentleman” and “Natalie” having a softer sound to them, but this isn’t Grace’s first song in the pop-punk genre. Previous releases like “You Ruined Nirvana,” “Checkered Vans” and “Buzzkill Baby” all have pop-punk and rock elements.

Regardless of what genre she tries, Grace always nails it and “LOSER!!” is no exception.
