“Twisters” stirred up a storm in Hollywood to become a summer blockbuster everyone should see.

From director Lee Isaac Chung, “Twisters” is the standalone sequel to Twister (1996). Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell star in the action-thriller, hooking the audience in for the storm.

The movie follows Kate Carter (Edgar-Jones), a retired storm chaser and meteorologist, who is haunted by a terrible encounter with a tornado from five years ago when she was still in college. Five years later, her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos), convinces her to chase tornados one more time, with new technology.

Back in Tornado Alley, Oklahoma, Kate is working with Javi and his team, Storm Par. Here she meets Tyler Owens (Powell), a smart but reckless “tornado wrangler” who has a hit YouTube Channel. Their competitive teams and a once-in-a-lifetime tornado season, make “Twisters” an interesting movie for the audience.

Sometimes movies can struggle to create a balance between explaining science and technology and sounding pretentious. “Twisters” is smart without making the audience feel stupid, adding on the Southern charm. The dialogue is explanatory and funny rather than pretentious.

While “Twisters” is not a romance, the chemistry between Kate and Tyler is hard to deny. Throughout the entire movie, Edgar-Jones and Powell stole the show with their performances, balancing charm and intelligence.

The two-and-a-half-hour movie, excluding the flashback scene, is told within the week. The characters wrangle multiple tornados and emotions. The plot moves fast and takes the time to tell the story properly as well.

While audiences on social media are focused on “Hot Glen Summer” at its core, the story is Kate’s.

Edgar-Jones was a performance to behold. Anger, helplessness, wonder and awe for tornadoes and sheer brilliance. She captured the audience as Kate. Her counterpart, Powell, effortlessly and charmingly played a smart cowboy. His portrayal of Tyler was attractive and intriguing.

Additionally, the supporting cast of the show really made the movie complete. Ramos’s Javi, creates an important link between Kate’s present and past, making him crucial to the story. Javi’s character also adds more depth to the story and drives it forward.

The best and most unexpected part of the movie was the addition of Katy M. O’Brian, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Brandon Perea and Tunde Adebimpe as the members of Tyler’s crew. While they did not have a lot of screen time, they stole every scene they were in and truly added the final piece to the story.

Furthermore, the movie is action-heavy and is very detailed in portraying the before, during and after of a tornado. The audience can really feel the weather in the movie and are transported to the location from their theater seats.

If there is one movie that would be well worth watching in 4DX, it would be “Twisters.”

In a lot of ways, “Twisters” also showed Hollywood how legacy sequels can be fun and stand out on their own. The movie is funny, smart and a good time. If you feel it, then you should go catch a show!
