UH's lifestyle and entertainment magazine - by students, for students

It’s the year of the great lock-in, and there’s no better way of making all your goals come true than with the magic of a vision board.

Even though it’s already the middle of the semester and the first round of exams are underway, there’s still time to make sure your grades and goals are aligned.

A vision board provides a platform for you to place everything you envision for yourself, no matter how delusional it may seem, in one place.

These goals can range from landing on the Dean’s List, good wellness habits, a dream internship offer, the love of your life, to anything else you want to make happen.

Vision boards are useful because they help motivate and put into perspective why you’re on the right path.

In a 2016 TD Bank survey, researchers discovered that one in five entrepreneurs uses a vision board. Not only that, over 80% of those business owners manifested what was on it.

This shows that having a plan and clear goals is a great way to set expectations for your future.

Getting started on your vision board.

There are many ways to create a vision board. For this, you’ll want to tap into that main-character energy, put yourself on a pedestal and make everything about you for a second.

Traditionally, vision boards are created with a poster board and decorated with words of affirmation and pictures from old magazines, symbolizing intended goals. These help to visualize the intentions in your mind, subsequently motivating physical action.

To start, think about your dream life and be as delusional as you want.

Want to study abroad? Cut out an airplane from an international travel company’s ad.

Want an internship at Apple? Cut out and glue the company’s logo.

Want to find love or friendship during the semester? Search for the words, letters or pictures of what you’d want that love or friendship to look like.

To build a physical board once you’ve acquired these pieces, here’s what you’ll need.

  • Poster or paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Old Cooglife magazines, newspapers, brochures, flyers, etc.
  • Markers and pens
  • A good playlist
  • Your dreams

If you’re not a fan of the physical boards, Canva and Pinterest are great tools for creating digital boards.

Once you have your materials ready, start by putting your name in the center.

From there build out your vision board using the words and pictures you found. Lay it all out with purpose, light a candle, play some music and get to snipping.

Alternatively, the same thing can be done using Canva or Pinterest. The benefit of creating a digital vision board is that you have an unlimited supply of content available online to fit your vision.

You could also double up the magic and do both.

Activating your vision board.

You’ll do this by hanging it up in your room so it’s always within view to harness the power of visualization.

If you don’t want anyone to see it, hide it under your bed and ritualistically meditate over it every morning before class to set your intentions for the day.

If you’ve made a digital vision board, set it as the wallpaper on your iPhone or computer desktop for some subconscious magic.

And it doesn’t end there; keep the vision going.

Don’t be afraid to add to your vision as you go along this semester.

Find a place on it for the flyer from that Yale Law School visit or the Cougar Grounds receipt that totaled up to $7.77.

Collect anything that reminds you of your goals or inspires you to dream even bigger. Most importantly, celebrate every single manifestation.

Embrace the delusion, dream big and cheers to manifesting a successful semester.
