The cast and crew of “The Importance of Being Earnest” brought drama to Houston in their performance at the Alley Theatre.

Set in late Victorian era England, this comedy explores themes of identity, social expectations and the absurdity of Victorian etiquette.

Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” follows two bachelors, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who invent alter egos to escape the rigid expectations of Victorian society.

Worthing, a countryman, adopts the name “Ernest” while in the city to pursue Gwendolen, whose mother embodies Victorian hierarchical expectations.

Gwendolyn dreams of marrying a man named “Ernest,” insisting that the name is special and holds some undefinable magic.

Under the impression that Worthing’s name is Ernest, Gwendolyn returns his affections to the ire of her mother.

Moncrieff also assumes the identity of “Ernest” in the countryside to win over Cecily, Worthing’s ward.

As their double lives collide, misunderstandings multiply, and engagements unravel, Wilde satirizes the era’s obsession with social status.

Despite the dialogue-heavy script, the play feels quite rich and action-packed.

Dylan Godwin as Moncrieff and Amelia Pedlow as Gwendolen were especially hilarious.

Guests will recognize themselves in the characters, and the writing is surprisingly relevant, even today.

The archetypes of teachers, students, gatekeepers and the struggle to find balance between identity and performance make this an intellectually engaging watch, especially for University of Houston students.

The play is peppered with wordplay, twists and surprises and infinitely quotable dialogue that can be brought to friends later!

“The Importance of Being Earnest” is a play that is as delightful as it is strikingly relevant today.

Running now through Mar. 29, 2026 at the Alley Theatre, tickets are available for purchase on the Alley Theatre website.
