Recently, women’s shag and mullet hairstyles have been becoming popular with Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and other celebrities rocking androgynous hair. However, this chunky and layered haircut can be pretty daunting.

Having a shag hairstyle can be fun to experiment with. Depending on hair type and washing habits, you may not have to do very frequent maintenance. It can be pretty forgiving based on those habits.

The first thing to consider when getting a layered cut is texture. Most of these cuts can look good just with some texture being added to your hair.

Either the VERB Volume Spray or the Eva NYC Mists are great for this as they are lightweight but still provide a good hold. The Eva NYC brand as they have a variety of products that work for specific hair types and textures. It also has a relatively low price point of $13. If you are looking for something, any of the Not Your Mothers volumizing sprays should work well.

You can scrunch these mists into damp hair as you are getting ready for the day and wear your hair down, but if you’re feeling fancy you could try these hairstyles.

French Braids

French braids are an amazing low-effort way to spice up your hair. This type of braid will allow you to get the majority of your hair into your braid without any large layers coming undone with a regular braid. You can spice these up with bows or cute hair ties.

Bandanas

Bandanas are a cute and affordable way to accessorize your outfit. They are also cute for hiding a bad hair day or when you’re just not feeling your shag.

Half Up, Half Down

Another way to style a shag is by styling your hair half up in a bun, ponytail or claw clip when you feel like your hair isn’t cooperating with you. Just putting up all of your hair when you have layers usually isn’t helpful because the shorter layers do not stay up, so doing something that only takes half of your hair up is a great solution.

Low-Space Buns

Lastly, low-space buns are a super cute hairstyle and can look great with the shagginess in most of these textured haircuts. You can accessorize them with pins, bows or cute hair ties to make a fun look.

Although having a shag can be daunting, it is a great haircut that can be styled easily and creatively. If you have wavy hair, you can just air dry it creating a cute and lowkey look.
