The 89th Academy Awards are held this Sunday night where the Best Picture award will be given to one film’s lucky cast and crew. Here are the top 5 choices on who will win the prestigious award.
“LA LA LAND”
“La La Land” features dazzling visuals, rich colors and concise direction from Chazelle. Furthermore, while the visuals are gorgeous to look at, what truly sells the film and its story is the relationship and chemistry between Gosling and Stone. However, the story’s structure isn’t perfect (2nd act drags and it needed script revision). But the minor flaws do not detract from the film overall. This is a film that should be seen with an audience. You will feel Chazelle’s passion for film bounce off the screen and flood your entire body. “La La Land” will likely be the big winner for several categories on Sunday night.
“Moonlight”
Containing a resonant story that’s impactful and showcases characters not usually given the spotlight, “Moonlight” gives fantastic performances and honest direction from Barry Jenkins. Truthfully, the film does come off as more intimate and consequential than truly great at times. It’s similar to 2014’s “Boyhood” in that regard. This is a minor flaw in a film that’s most astounding. “Moonlight” is likely to receive attention from Oscar voters this weekend.
“Manchester by the Sea”
“Manchester by the Sea” offers viewers a somber and unfiltered look at the hardships of life. Its balance of levity and drama is impeccable. What truly grounds the film is the emotionally powerful performance from Casey Affleck. While the film is unlikely to win Best Picture at the Oscars, talk of Affleck taking home the award for Best Actor has been discussed.
“Hell or High Water”
Released in select theaters this August, “Hell or High Water” failed at making a huge impact with general audiences and instead barley made back its budget. Yet the film was a critical success, with a multitude of critics calling the thriller one of the year’s best. The film is wonderfully paced and full of intense sequences. The film ultimately succeeds due to the powerhouse combination of Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster. It’s a must-see western that is sure to make a sizable impact on viewers and might be a heavy contender on Sunday night.
“Hidden Figures”
“Hidden Figures” features a resounding story full of desire and relevancy even in 2017. The cast of women does an outstanding job, each offering a precise flavor to the film. The film is commendable for its ability to take a largely unknown story and communicate it well. Audiences will feel a passionate payoff that will leave them walking away content. The film’s relevancy in its themes might allow it to receive recognition from Academy voters this Sunday.
