Stephen King’s acclaimed thriller “Misery” is brought to the stage at the Alley Theatre in Houston.
The show premiered on May. 29, 2026, as part of the Alley Theatre’s 2025-26 Season.
The novel was published in June of 1987, and became an instant hit amongst readers. Since its initial release, the story has been adapted multiple times.
Much like the novel, the 1990 film by the same title was also a major success, with multiple stage adaptations following shortly after.
“Misery” follows fictional writer Paul Sheldon as he finds himself trapped under the questionable care of his self proclaimed “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes.
“Misery” at the Alley Theatre showcases a multitude of artistic talents. The rotating set focuses on three distinct areas, the front of Wilkes’ house, her dining room and her guest bedroom, where she is housing Sheldon.

University of Houston alumna Kimberly Jackson says “I enjoyed seeing misery, the set design was really interesting, it’s like a semi circle and the stage moves. When Paul Sheldon was moving around the house, the stage moved with him which was really captivating. It added a lot of tension during the scenes.”
The acting performances were superb, with incredible special effects to enhance the scenes. Additionally, Elizabeth Bunch’s portrayal of Annie Wilkes was chilling, with a fantastic performance as Paul Sheldon by Chris Hutchison as well.
“It was my first time seeing a thriller play and I loved it. It’s such a small cast but each character added so much depth to the play,” states Jackson.
