Things to do on Valentine’s Day for Singles

Valentine’s day is fastly approaching if you couldn’t already tell from the large amounts of decorations on display at the grocery store. However, this could be good or bad news depending on how you feel about the holiday. For the couples out there February 14th is a fun day to celebrate their love, but for some singles this is a day that you may be dreading. Even if you are confident in being single, sometimes Valentine’s Day can be difficult. Seeing all the couples and love in the air can cause some singles to feel lonely and insecure.

It is important to remember not to believe the false reality that everyone has someone. The best way to spend February 14th is to forget about Valentine’s Day altogether and spend it with family, friends or just treating yourself to a good time. Here is a list of 14 things that you can do with friends, family or by yourself for Valentine’s Day.

  1. Have a social media free day

The best way to start the day is to take a break from social media. It is not helpful to destroy ourselves by scrolling through our exes’ or our crushes’ page looking at pictures of them and their significant other. I would also recommend disabling notifications from these social media apps to prevent any temptations. Sometimes social media apps insert posts you may have missed from the previous day in your feed, so you may want to consider taking a break from social media during the entire week of Valentine’s.

  1. Take pictures around Houston

A great way to spend February 14th is with friends creating memories. Grab a group of friends and travel around Houston hitting places like the ‘Houston is Inspired’ mural, Buffalo Bayou Park, Mecom Rockwell Colonnade and Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park. Make sure to dress accordingly for that last one. If you stand too close to the waterwall it is easy to get hit by the mist. Nonetheless, these spots are great places to have a fun photoshoot with friends.

  1. Have a night out on the town

After a long day at school or work (or maybe both) a night with your single friends might be what you need. You can start the evening hitting your favorite mall or going to your favorite shops/boutiques, and end the night going to your squad’s go-to restaurant.

  1. Treat yourself to a makeover

Since Valentine’s Day is almost here it is possible that most of your friends and family already have plans. There is no reason to fret if you are spending the holiday alone because with all the stress that comes with everyday life you are overdue for a little “me” time. A great way to spend the night is to treat yourself to a makeover. Treat yourself to a new haircut, or a facial. If you can’t afford going to a salon, go to your local beauty store and buy your own facial kit or buy yourself new make-up and play around with it. No human being is going to treat you better than you.

  1. Escape Game Houston

Feeling adventurous? The Escape Game Houston is perfect for you. Spend an hour of your evening following clues with friends or family. The Escape Game Houston has different missions that you can go on from prison breaks to art heists. You can book your adventure on their website or by phone, and make sure to arrive 10 minutes early to check-in.

  1. Try something new

Be spontaneous this Valentine’s Day and try something new. Take a class learning something you have never tried before. Explore your artistic side and take a painting or sculpting class, or let loose and take a dancing class. You can tap into your tough side and take a karate or boxing class. A self-defense class is also an option and can help you in the future when you need to protect yourself. This is an activity that you can do by yourself or a group.

  1. Top Golf

Gather a group of friends or some family and enjoy a fun evening playing golf. Topgolf is a great place to have dinner, play golf, and be entertained. Their website makes it easy to plan your next visit.

  1. Play putt putt

Pixar Putt is a dream come true for Disney Pixar fans. Pixar Putt is an interactive minigolf course where people can enjoy some of their favorite Pixar movies and characters. Pixar Putt will be in Houston until March 20th.

  1. Host a Galentine’s Day Party

Celebrate your singleness with some friends and host a fun Galentine’s Day Party. Spend the night playing games, exchanging worst date stories and have a chocolate tasting test.

  1. Take a Trip

Take a trip to a nearby town and explore a place you have never been to before. Walk down the streets of a small town and see how different it is than the big city of Houston. Make sure to shop at the small owned stores, and don’t be afraid to talk with the locals. You may be surprised at what you find.

  1. Go to the movie theater

If you are looking for more of a laid-back evening, a night at the movie theater with friends may be perfect for you. There are some really good movies that are available to watch at your nearest movie theater. If you do not want to be out with the crowds and want to practice social distancing there’s always the stay-at-home-and-stream option.

  1. Let me take a selfie!

Another way to spend Valentine’s Day is spending it at Selfie Escape. Selfie Escape is a selfie museum located in Memorial City Mall. You and your friends can take the best Instagrammable selfies, and each room in the museum has a different theme to try. Go to their website to book your time.

  1. Watch Caridad Svich’s The Book of Magdalene

Main Street Theater will be having a virtual showing of Caridad Svich’s The Book of Magdalene. The showing will be available from February 11th to February 28th. Main Street Theater says that it is, “about finding the courage to move on when life feels as if it is stuck in place.” If you are feeling down about Valentine’s Day this is a great story to watch with family, friends or by yourself.

Tickets are available on their website. After you buy your tickets they will email you an activation code to watch, but after you enter the code you only have 48 hours to watch it. Make sure to read the important information about buying your ticket and how to watch it on their website before you buy your ticket.

  1. Give back

Instead of looking for a way to find your own happiness on Valentine’s Day, live the day with gratitude. Spend February 14th giving back to others. Volunteer at your nearest animal shelter, at soup kitchen or whatever your favorite volunteer organization is. You can also do something as simple as cooking a romantic dinner for your parents on Valentine’s Day.
