It is a historic snow day in Houston.
Snow in Texas, while beautiful, also means the city shuts down. Staying off the roads and indoors can be fun for a little while. However, it eventually gets boring.
To fully enjoy the warmth inside–between snowball fights and building snow people, of course. Here is a a list of snow day recommendation including books, TV shows and albums to indulge in.
“The Hunger Games Series” by Suzanne Collins (Book)
The modern, young-adult dystopian novels by Collins tells the story of a 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen and the struggle for independence from a tyrant.
At the ruins of what was once North America, stands the Capitol of Panem. Every year the Capitol selects a boy and girl, each from the districts to compete in a nationally televised event–The Hunger Games.
In addition to the original trilogy, Collins has written two other prequel Hunger Games books, with Sunrise on the Reaping coming out on March 18.
“Book Lovers” by Emily Henry (Book)
Two rivals, Nora Stephens and Charlie Lastra, are accidently in the same small town for the summer. They keep running into each other with twists no one sees coming.
Through accidental run-ins and the proximity of the small town, Nora and Charlie slowly begin to unravel their preconceived notions about themselves and each other.
Henry’s “Book Lovers” is a book about two book lovers who take the readers on a journey about love, friendship, life and sisterhood.
“The Perks of being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky (Book)
Charlie writes letters about his high school experience. These letters–more intimate than a diary–show the readers the innermost thoughts of a boy trying to understand life and run away from it at the same time.
This coming-of-age story is a precious, thought provoking and powerful novel. It takes the readers through the roller coaster called growing up.
“Gilmore Girls” (TV show)
Lorelia and Rory Gilmore are mother-daughter but, above all, best friends. They live in a storybook, small town in Connecticut and balance their small town lives with the occasional appearance in the Gilmore’s high society lifestyle.
The seven-season show follows the Gilmore Girls as they balance their daily lives and careers.
“The Resident” (TV show)
Conrad Hawinks is one of the best doctors at Chastain Memorial Hospital, arrogant yet charming. He practices medicine in unconventional methods whenever necessary and thinks it is his mission to shatter the romantic illusion of first year residents.
Dr. Devon Pravesh, a first year resident, assigned to Conrad, is an idealist who leans on his moral compass and follows the rules.
This medical drama series follows Conrad and Pravesh as they buttheads and learn from one another. It also follows a group of doctors at Chastain Memorial Hospital who fight to balance life and their demanding jobs at the hospital.
“White Collar” (TV show)
Neal Caffrey, is a charmer and genius, but most importantly he is a white collar criminal. The third time Caffery is caught by FBI agent Peter Burke, he offers Burke a deal: freedom for his skills to help catch criminals.
The six-season TV show offers a fresh and interesting perspective on the white collar division of the FBI and gives the audience a unique partnership in Burke and Caffery.
“Stick Season (forever)” by Noah Kahan (Album)
Kahan’s second album, Stick Season’s deluxe edition contains 30 songs, filled with collaborations and songs about sticks.
The songs “Northern Attitude,” “Stick Season” and “Come Over” capture the wintertime nostalgia and longing.
“Evermore” by Taylor Swift (Album)
The forgotten sister album by Swift, “Evermore,” is perhaps her most wintertime album (yet). The 17-song album has cozy vibes and strong lyrics.
Songs like “’tis the damn season” and “evermore” uncannily capture the wintertime blues–perfect for this snow day.
