Another rodeo season kicks off in Houston today to bring entertainment, culture and that Texas flare to crowds at NRG. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been going on for nearly a century, tying performers and those passionate about agriculture to the same place.
The rodeo covers 20 days of competitions, with entertainers to round off the night. In 2024, HLSR will hold opening night on February 27 with Blake Shelton on stage.
Some of the events offered in the tournament-style competitions for RODEOHOUSTON include bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, and women’s barrel racing and breakaway roping, according to the home webpage.
There is more to HLSR than just the bull riding and the music. Outside of NRG Stadium, attendees will see hundreds of rides, games, food stalls, shopping booths and more. One of the biggest carnival staples is the 130-foot-tall Ferris Wheel overseeing all of the festivities.
Some of the new food vendors this year will include Waffle Chix with menu items like the Oreo brownie blast and chicken in a waffle on a stick, Big Fat Bacon with chocolate bacon on a stick and MiaBellas Wood Fired Pizza that includes BBQ bacon bourbon wood-fired pizza on the menu.
A large part of the HLSR is the focus on scholarships. Since the first prize in 1957, millions of dollars have been awarded in scholarships and grants to students pursuing education in the state of Texas—2024’s total of projected awards rounds out to $27,317,634.
Some special days to look out for when planning your visit to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo include Family Wednesdays, Sensory Friendly Day, Black Heritage Day, Community Day, Go Tejano Day and more.
As far as entertainment for the 2024 rodeo season goes, there are performers like Brad Paisley who are veterans of the RODEOHOUSTON stage, and newcomers like Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll and Nickelback who will be embarking on the dirt arena for the first time.
Entertainers included on special days of the 20-day festivities are Carly Pearce for Armed Forces Appreciation Day, 50 Cent for Black Heritage Day and Los Tigres del Norte for Go Tejano Day.
