For one night only, The Hobby Center and Silambam Houston presented “Kāvya: Poetry in Motion.”
The production is a combination between poetry and Indian classical dance, showcasing that neither time, language nor culture can sever the unifying thread between every human heart. The show is divided into six chapters featuring multiple poems narrated in the native language of the original author.
Diverse poets spanning time and geography were selected, including 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou. Consequently, the poets elevated the statement of the show, “we are all human and we all share certain defining experiences.”
The sheer size of the student cast is an art in itself. The dancers are synchronized and perform as nuanced vessels, passionately delivering the themes of each chapter.
The production felt emotionally rich and incredibly immersive.
Costume color coordinates with the lighting, and bells are affixed to costumes so their jingles harmonize perfectly with the soundscape. No detail is overlooked.
Silambam Houston, founded by Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan, has developed and promoted classical Indian arts in Houston for nearly 25 years. Moreover, in 2023, the non-profit was recognized as a “Houston Cultural Treasure” by the BIPOC Arts Network & Fund.
Additionally, Rajagopalan was also the creative director for this original production. “Kāvya: Poetry in Motion” is a part of The Hobby Center’s “Houston is Inspired” initiative, an artist residency program.
Mark Folkes, President and CEO of The Hobby Center, states that “The Hobby Center serves as a presenting partner, providing space, support, and collaboration to help bring ambitious projects to life. Each residency represents an investment in the creative process itself, offering artists the time and resources to refine their work and share it fully with audiences.”
The Hobby Center presented “Kāvya: Poetry in Motion” in Zilkha Hall on May 1, 2026. Be sure to check out Silambam Houston’s programs, and upcoming shows at The Hobby Center.
